Run For Her: Aurora Rise for Women's Buffalo City Trail Run Challenge

On 30 August, the Beacon Bay Country Club field turned into something more than a race route — it became a statement. Aurora Rise for Women hosted the Buffalo City Trail Run Challenge, a morning of movement with a purpose far bigger than kilometres covered: raising funds and awareness for our pad drive, and for an upcoming campaign standing behind young women and girls everywhere.
If you weren't there, here's what you missed.
The morning kicked off early, with registration and race pack collection from 05:15, ahead of a 06:00 start. Runners had their pick of three routes a 2km, 5km, or 10km trail winding through Beacon Bay against a backdrop of hills and cloud-heavy Eastern Cape skies. It wasn't the kind of weather that makes you want to leave the house, but that's exactly the point: people showed up anyway, because the cause mattered more than the conditions.
And show up they did. Many people came out to lace up for the cause, filling the field with colour, energy, and a shared sense of purpose. Goodie bags in hand, Red Bull cans raised high, and a lot of laughter between the finish line and the prize-giving at 09:45 — the atmosphere was less "competitive race" and more "community celebration." Virgin Active even brought the energy up a notch with a Saturday stretching session, keeping spirits (and heart rates) up long after runners crossed the line.
None of this happens without serious backing, and this is where the true scale of the day comes into focus. The Buffalo City Trail Run Challenge was proudly supported by over 25 brands, businesses, and partners — a mix of household names and local Eastern Cape businesses who believed in what we're building.
We ran in association with Lakes Group, Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality, Racepass, and Priority-Care Ambulance Service Eastern Cape, who kept everyone safe on the day. Our headline partners — Nedbank, Red Bull, Virgin Active, Engen, and MTN — brought both resources and visibility to the cause, standing shoulder to shoulder with our mission to keep girls in school and end period poverty.
Beyond that, we were carried by an incredible circle of local support: MDU Marketing, Peak Performance, Pakade TypeWork, Andy M Lifestyle, Bumb'ingomso, Safer South Africa Foundation, Still She Bloomed, Previllage Lifestyle Global, Freddy Nails, Kae Galaxy Studio, Edge Fitness Clubs, and more — alongside venue partners BMW, 3 Silo's MTB Adventure Trails, Premier Hotel East London ICC, and Buffalo Club.
Every logo on that sponsor board represents a business that chose to stand with young women who might otherwise miss school for something as basic — and as fixable — as access to sanitary products. Period poverty is still a silent issue in too many South African communities. It doesn't make headlines, but it quietly pulls girls out of classrooms every single month. Days like this one exist to change that story, one pad drive, one campaign, one run at a time.
To every runner who pulled on their trainers in the cold, every sponsor who backed the vision, and every hand that packed a goodie bag or pitched a tent before sunrise thank you. You didn't just run a route. You helped keep a girl in school.
Because when we rise, we rise together.
